York heat pump service in Queens typically runs $150 – $650 for most repairs, and we keep the most common York-compatible parts on our trucks so we can often complete the job the same day we arrive. The parts that fail most are contactors, capacitors, defrost control boards, and reversing valves – components that take the brunt of our cold, damp winters and humid summers. Usually, you’ll notice the problem first as a heat pump that runs constantly without warming the house, one that’s frozen over in winter, or a unit that trips its breaker. If your York is doing any of that, the part that’s failed is usually identifiable in the first twenty minutes of diagnosis.
Which York Models This Applies To
We service the full York heat pump line you’re most likely to have in Queens: the Affinity series (YHM, YZH), the LX series (YHJF, YHM), and the entry-level Latitude line. The compatibility gotcha with York heat pumps is the defrost control board. York has used at least four different board revisions across the same model years, and they are not interchangeable. The mounting points and wiring harnesses differ, so matching the board to the exact model number on the data plate matters more than matching it to the series name. You’ll find the model number on a metal or foil tag on the outside corner of the condenser. It’ll read something like YHJF36S41S1, and that string tells us the tonnage, cabinet size, and refrigerant, which narrows the part list to exactly what fits.
For OEM parts, York uses names like S1- follow codes – for example, an S(024) 356-88000 contactor or an S(025) 353-73000 defrost board. We can source OEM York parts typically within two to four business days in Queens. But in many cases, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a manufacturer like Mars or Supco does the job just as well for 30 to 50 percent less, and we stock several of those on the truck. We’ll always tell you which option we’re quoting and why, and we’ll put it in writing before any work starts. One note: Brandt HVAC Co Queens is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with York or Johnson Controls, and servicing your York heat pump does not affect the manufacturer’s warranty if the part itself is still under coverage.

Signs Your York Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- The outdoor unit runs but doesn’t produce heat. In winter, a heat pump that’s blowing cold air often points to a failed reversing valve or a stuck check valve. The reversing valve is the part that flips the system between heating and cooling, and when it sticks, the refrigerant goes the wrong way.
- The system trips the breaker repeatedly. This is frequently a failing capacitor or a grounded compressor contactor. A weak capacitor overworks the compressor motor, which draws too many amps, and the breaker protects the circuit by shutting it down.
- The outdoor coil is a block of ice in winter. York heat pumps run defrost cycles to melt frost, but a failed defrost control board or a bad defrost thermostat means the cycle never happens. Left alone, that ice crushes the coil fins and can destroy the compressor.
- The heat pump runs in the wrong mode. If you set the thermostat to heat and get cold air, the reversing valve is energized when it shouldn’t be. On York units, this sometimes traces back to a failed solenoid coil on the valve itself rather than the valve body, which is a less expensive fix.
- You hear a hard buzzing or chattering from the condenser. That’s the sound of a contactor with pitted contacts or a relay that’s failing to close cleanly. Over time, arcing burns the contact points, and the electrical connection becomes intermittent.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most York heat pump service repairs in Queens fall between $150 and $650, parts and labor included. On the lower end are capacitors, contactors, and defrost thermostats – twenty to forty minute jobs with parts that cost $25 to $80 at cost. In the middle are defrost control boards and fan motors, which usually land around $300 to $500. At the upper end sit reversing valves and compressor replacement work, which can push past the top of that range because recovering and recharging refrigerant takes hours, not minutes, and refrigerant itself is not cheap.
Every quote we give is a written price before any work starts. That price includes the part, the labor, the refrigerant if needed, and the cleanup. It also includes a written guarantee on the repair. If the part we installed fails within the guarantee period, we return at no additional charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise. We don’t do open-ended estimates or “we’ll see how it goes.” You’ll know the number before we pick up a tool.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. There are two things you can safely check yourself. First, confirm your thermostat is set to heat mode and the setpoint is above room temperature. Second, check the breaker at your panel and the service disconnect near the outdoor unit. If either tripped, reset once and see if the unit holds.
What you should not do is open the cabinet of a York heat pump and start probing. The capacitor inside stores enough voltage to stop your heart even with the power off if it hasn’t discharged. The reversing valve, defrost board, and contactor live in the same compartment as line voltage wiring and 400+ volt capacitor terminals. This is not a washing machine hose. If you’re comfortable checking the thermostat and breaker, do that first. After that, call us. Devin Marlowe tells his customers the same thing on every first call: “Tell me what it is, tell me what it costs, tell me it holds – that is the whole job.” We’ll diagnose it, quote the price, and fix it the same visit if the part’s on the truck. FAQs
A York heat pump in Queens will usually need a capacitor every 5 to 7 years, a contactor around the 8 to 10 year mark, and a defrost control board somewhere in the 10 to 15 year range. Our coastal humidity and winter salt air accelerate electrical contact corrosion more than inland climates do. Call (845) 328-4955 if you want us to test the electrical components on your York before they fail mid-season.
For most electrical components like capacitors, contactors, and defrost boards, replacement is the only legitimate repair. These parts are not rebuildable in the field, and attempting to patch them is how you end up with a second failure a month later. For a reversing valve, it depends on whether the solenoid coil failed or the internal valve body seized. The coil can be swapped; the valve body requires evacuation and replacement. We’ll tell you which you have and what it costs before we start.
A capacitor or contactor replacement takes 30 to 45 minutes on site. A defrost control board is usually one to two hours. A reversing valve repair takes four to six hours because it involves recovering the refrigerant, replacing the valve, pressure testing, and recharging. If we have the part on the truck, most repairs finish same day in Queens.
We stock common capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and several defrost board variants on our trucks, along with parts that fit Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems since York isn’t the only brand we see on service calls. Less common York-specific parts can be sourced from our suppliers in Queens quickly, and we’ll give you a solid arrival date before we order anything.
